　川端実は、1911年東京に生まれた。祖父は日本画家川端玉章、父も日本画家川端茂章。1936年の文展鑑査展では《海辺》が入選して選奨に、1939年には光風会会員に挙げられて頭角を現わす。

　
　しかし、本格的にその画業を展開したのは、戦後で意欲的に作品を発表。1950年代にはフォーヴィックな作風から、画面を構成する強い意識をもちつつキュビスム的な作品を描く。
　
　
　1958年以降はベティ・パーソン画廊と契約し、 第２回グッゲンハイム国際展において《リズム　茶》により個人表彰名誉賞。1959年、第５回サンパウロ・ビエンナーレ展で 受賞。以後も、主にニューヨークを舞台に活動。独自の抽象画を制作してきた。

　
　川端実の生誕100年を記念。戦後の代表作を中心に作品の変遷を、油彩約45点、デッサン類10点で紹介。川端実没後最初で19年振りの本格的な回顧展である。

Yokosuka Museum of Art is proud to present "Kawabata Minoru: A retrospective"


Kawabata Minoru was born in Tokyo, 1911. He began to make conspicuous figure early in his life, with his "Seaside" being accepted as a recommended piece to the Bun Ten in 1936, and by being listed as a member of Kofu-kai in 1939.
However, his substantial work as a painter did not start until after the end of World War II. His energetic activities exceeded the domestic scene, making contract with the Betty Parsons Gallery from 1958, receiving the individual honor award at the second Guggenheim International with "Rhythm brown," and winning the prize money from the fifth São Paulo Biennial the following year. His position as an international artist solidified. Thereafter, he kept active mainly in New York, creating original abstract paintings with keenly captured composition and excellent sense of color.


This exhibition intends to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Kawabata Minoru's birth and his achievements, and to re-examine his footsteps. With his important works from post-war era in the center, powerful, keen and intense transition of his works will be presented with some forty-five oil paintings and ten pieces of drawings. This exhibition also signifies the first exhibition after his passing, as well as the first one-man show after an interval of nineteen years.
